Darren Ferguson is looking to secure the services of Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck on another loan deal at Preston.
The North End chief took the 19-year-old starlet to Deepdale on a loan deal from United in January, but a knee injury resulted in Welbeck only managing to make eight appearances for the club.
However Ferguson has revealed that he wants to negotiate a new deal with United for Welbeck and his team-mate Matt James as he plots several changes in the close-season.
Ferguson told the Lancashire Evening Post: "There are things I want to change here.
"You want to bring in your own players alongside the ones you want to keep - there are some very good players here.
"I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't make changes and freshen things up after finding ourselves in this position. "
"We'll wait and see how busy I am.
"Not much business is done in May and June, as people try to save money.
"The board and myself will get together, and they are going to have to help me in terms of making changes.
"I've made subtle changes already, but there needs to be a freshness about the squad.
"I can't put numbers on it, things aren't as simple as saying I want a certain number of players in and a certain number out."
