Plymouth say they have started the search for a new manager with Paul Mariner remaining in charge until someone is appointed.
Many thought Mariner, who became coach of the Pilgrims in December when he replaced Paul Sturrock, would remain at the club despite relegation to League One.
The former England striker had stated his desire to remain in the role, but it appears the Plymouth board have decided to go down another route and will now sift through the CV's of all interested parties.
Chairman Sir Roy Gardner said: "Paul was fully aware that the board would review his position at the end of the season.
"
We will now begin the process of seeking applications."
