Celtic break Hearts

by setanta.com staff , 09 May 2010

Robbie Keane was on target as Celtic ended a dismal season on a high with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday afternoon.

The on-loan Tottenham Hotspur striker opened the scoring midway through the first half only for Marius Zaliukas to equalise for the hosts ten minutes before the interval.

However, Celtic claimed all three points when Chinese midfielder Zheng Zhi volleyed home on the hour.

Celtic had to make do without injured trio Artur Boruc, Diomansy Kamara and Lee Naylor but the visitors began brightly and deservedly opened the scoring on 23 minutes when Keane latched on to Aiden McGeady's fine through-ball before coolly firing the ball past Hearts keeper Jamie MacDonald.

The visitors were not ahead for long, though, with Zaliukas turning in Craig Thomson's free-kick after being left completely unattended in the Celtic box.
Hearts then very nearly moved ahead just after half-time but David Templeton's low drive went just wide.

The game was livening up and moments later Celtic boss Neil Lennon was left fuming after referee Craig Thompson disallowed a goal for Edson Braafheid, who had found the back of the net with a brilliant free-kick. However, Thompson had indicated that the free was indirect, much to Celtic's frustration.

However, the visitors reclaimed the lead in the 61st minute when Zhi finished emphatically after collecting a cross from the right-hand side and held on to secure a eighth successive SPL win for caretaker boss Lennon.
