Nani rift rumours rejected

by Setanta.com staff , 14 June 2010

The Portuguese Football Federation have denied that Nani was sent home from the World Cup for anything other than the shoulder injury he suffered in training.

Reports have stated that the Manchester United winger flew to South Africa with the rest of the squad and trained for two days after sustaining the injury.

Nani did nothing to quell these reports, telling reporters at Lisbon airport: "I'll be fine in a week."

Were the 23-year-old telling the truth, he would only have missed Portugal's opener against the Ivory Coast before returning for the clashes against Brazil and North Korea.

However, vice president of the Portuguese federation, Amandio de Carvalho, said: "There is no attempting to hide anything, there was only the hope that he could have recovered."

Nani said he had hoped to shine for his country after seeing his fortunes at Manchester United improve greatly last season.

"I thought this was going to be my World Cup, I was training and playing well, but that's life," he said.

"I worked a lot for this World Cup but I had the misfortune to injure myself before the start."
