Robinson makes shock return

by Admin , 26 July 2010

World Cup-winning winger Jason Robinson will play for National League rugby side Fylde next season after coming out of retirement.

Robinson, who will celebrate his 36th birthday this coming Friday, had enjoyed a successful career in both codes of the sport with spells at league sides Hunslet and Wigan, while playing for both England and Great Britain.

He then switched to union where he featured for Bath and Sale in addition to playing in more than 50 internationals for England, who he helped lift the rugby world cup in 2003.

The former British and Irish Lions star decided to hang up his boots during the 2007-08 season, but he has now been tempted back into the game with Fylde, who finished ninth in National North Two last season.

Robinson will link up with former England manager Brian Ashton, who returned to Fylde as a coaching consultant last month.

"It is a remarkably fortunate coincidence for me to be returning to help out my old club Fylde as Jason arrives to play," Ashton said.

"I have had the privilege of working with Jason and know that his stature, ability and qualities as a player and a person will benefit all who come into contact with him, both on and off the field."

Fylde's head coach Mark Nelson is also no stranger to Robinson as he was backs coach with Sale during the side's 2005-06 Premiership-winning season.

"I am absolutely delighted we have signed Jason for next season," he said.

"Given his record in both codes of the game, it's not an exaggeration to say he is the best ever rugby player.

"It's a fantastic opportunity for our players to play alongside such an experienced and mercurial talent and I expect a number of players will express an interest in joining the club to have a similar opportunity."
