Williams hopes for two more years

by setanta.com staff , 29 August 2010

Cardiff Blues and Wales veteran Martyn Williams says he is likely to retire from rugby in two years’ time.

The 95-times capped flanker, who has also starred for the British and Irish Lions, will turn 35 this week but hopes to play in next year’s World Cup before calling time on his playing days at club level at the end of that season.

The player should reach 100 caps in the next few months after missing the summer Tour and is looking forward to one last crack at the World Cup, after being talked out of retirement by Welsh coach Warren Gatland after the last one in 2007.

"I think I have this year and next year left in me," Williams told the Wales on Sunday after playing in front of 10,000 spectators in his testimonial game against the Dragons on Friday evening. "A decision will have to be made November or December time if I do go for another year.

"I have been very fortunate because I have been really well looked after at the Blues over the last couple of years. Mamma Molitika is three years older than me but there are a lot of guys who are still going. I will be 36 and I don't think that is old. I feel good and I do think there is another season left in me after this one.

"It's probably a bit early to set that goal but we will see how I feel in November or December time. The talks have been pretty positive but it's a bit early for both sides to make a decision now."

n Wales, he added: We have the autumn and the RBS Six Nations to come, but in Wales we don't have a huge group of players to pick from so we need everybody we can.

"Hopefully, whether I am first-choice or second-choice, I can help out next summer and be around for the World Cup. My experience and the small group of players we have in Wales means we need everybody to be fit and firing for a tournament like that.

"I spoke long and hard with Gats (Gatland) about not going to New Zealand (for the summer Tour). I told him that having this summer off would set me up for another year and I was invited for the squad fitness testing in August, so he is still thinking of me.

“It's a long season but hopefully I can make a real impact this time around."
