Fine start for Connacht

by Dave Maher , 04 September 2010

Connacht got their 2010-11 Magners League campaign off to an excellent start with a 40-17 home victory over the Newport Gwent Dragons.

Four tries on the night also ensured that the Irish province bagged a bonus point.

The hosts got off to a fine start when back row Ray Ofisa Treviranus went over after just three minutes, following a strong line-out and a break from centre Niva Ta'auso, with Ian Keatley converting.

The out-half, however, missed the chance to increase his side's lead from a penalty, before Matthew Jones reduced the deficit, via a post, with the boot after 18 minutes, as Ezra Taylor was handed a yellow card.

Keatley, though, soon replied with his first successful penalty of the sunny evening in Galway City.

After a missed place kick from Jones, a period of Connacht pressure at the other end, with the visitors' Luke Charteris in the sin-bin, saw the Dragons give up another chance to Keatley, which he took to move the Irish side 10 points clear.

Hooker Sean Cronin, after being fed by prop Jamie Hagan, grabbed Connacht's second try when he burst through to dive over just after the half-hour. Keatley easily converted.

Late in the first half, Jones belted over two penalties, to leave his side just 11 points down at the interval.

Jones missed a long-range attempt early in the second period, but was then successful minutes later.

Keatley responded with a penalty after 55 minutes, following his own 50-yard break following a handling error by the Dragons, before adding another from close range just after the hour.

Two scores in quick succession either side of the 70-minute mark ended the visitors' resistance, and secured a bonus point for Connacht. Firstly, sustained pressure saw the Dragons concede a penalty try, then Keatley broke from distance and dummied to score. He added the extras on both occasions.

Will Harries secured a consolation try, with Jones unable to convert, for the Welsh outfit.
