Kolo takes one for the team

by Admin , 08 September 2010

Former Manchester City skipper Kolo Toure has revealed he has no problem with striker Carlos Tevez taking the captain's armband.

Toure was made City captain by former boss Mark Hughes but retained the honour following Roberto Mancini's appointment at Eastlands.

However, Tevez was handed the armband at the start of the season and Toure has revealed Mancini explained he had made the decision to change skipper as the Italian believes the added responsibility will bring out the best in the Argentina international striker.

Toure revealed Mancini compared Tevez's situation to that of Argentine legend Diego Maradona's at Napoli in the 1980s and the defender insists it is not a problem that he is no longer the team's captain.

"The boss came to see me at the start of the season and told me he had a difficult decision to make," Toure said.

"He broke the news that he would be making Carlos captain, in order that he would become a lot more involved with the club's squad.

"He even quoted the example of Diego Maradona at Napoli, who worked wonders once he had been appointed their captain.

"I told him it was not a problem and accepted his decision. I'm not more important than the team and the decision was taken for the benefit of Manchester City."
