Northern Ireland held by Faroes

by Setanta.com staff , 12 October 2010

Northern Ireland were held to an embarrasing 1-1 draw by Brian Kerr's Faroe Islands on Tuesday evening, massively denting their hopes of qualification for Euro 2012.

The minnows took the lead on 60 minutes when a mistake by Stephen Craigan allowed Christian Holst to score.

Kyle Lafferty saved a point for Nigel Worthington's men late in the game, but they were unable to turn their pressure into a winner.

Northern Ireland had much the better of the first half and were only kept out by a stubborn Faroes defence.

Rangers striker Lafferty provided a constant threat up front, coming close four times in the opening twenty minutes. The 23-year-old's best chance of the half came when goalkeeper Mikkelson tipped over from 20 yards.

The Faroes had their chances but Maik Taylor saved easily from both Holst and Simun Samuelson.

Niall McGinn should have scored just after the break but missed an open goal, and shortly afterwards the home side had the lead.

Craigan's awful touch gifted possession to the Faroes.

Udsen played in Holst, who wriggled free 10 yards out before shooting across Taylor and into the bottom corner.

Chris Baird and Jonny Evans wasted good chances to equalise before the North finally converted an opportunity. Lafferty jinked past three players, played a one-two with Chris Brunt before slotting home the equaliser from 20 yards.

Worthington's side piled forward in search of a late, late winner. However, they were unable to break down their plucky opposition.
