Wolves fight back to earn Doncaster draw

by Setanta staff , 08 January 2011

Doncaster and Wolves will have to do it all again after playing out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Goals from Billy Sharp and James Coppinger ensured Doncaster went in 2-1 in front at the break, but Wolves came out firing and it was only matter of time before they equalised.

It came courtesy of Stephen Hunt's penalty and although both sides had the chance to snatch the victory late on, the draw was the fairest result overall.

It was Wolves who almost grabbed the lead with just 30 seconds on the clock when Steven Fletcher found space on the left and crossed from the left.

Stephen Ward got on the end of it, but he sent his shot just inches wide and they were nearly made to pay when Billy Sharp had the opportunity to give the home side the lead, only for him to mis-fire.

It proved to be an end-to-end opening 45 minutes with Richard Stearman going close for Doncaster before Sam Hird had his effort go wide.

Doncaster managed to find the net first when Sharp turned home a cross from  Joseph Mills, but it was ruled out for offside and on the half-hour mark they were denied a penalty when Mills' header struck Doherty on the arm.

Despite Rovers' dominance it was Wolves who grabbed the lead in the 37th minute when Nenad Milijas struck from 35 yards to leave Sullivan with no chance of saving.

Their lead did not last as Sharp levelled just three minutes later after being fed through by Coppinger.

With half-time approaching the Championship took a deserved lead through James Hayter, who got on the end of John Oster's header and fired home to beat Hahnemann.

If Doncaster dominated the first half, it was Wolves who took control after the interval and there was an air of inevitability about the equaliser.

Hird tripped Matt Jarvis in the box and Anthony Taylor did not hesitate in awarding the penalty, which Hunt duly sent passed Sullivan's left and into the Doncaster goal on 58 minutes.

Ward and Jarvis both had opportunities to give the visitors the lead, but their efforts failed to find the target and with 15 minutes remaining Mick McCarthy's side were down to ten following George Elokobi's sending off.

Elokobi clashed with Coppinger on the halfway line and after several minutes delay he was shown a straight red.

Both sides went in search of the winner, but their efforts proved fruitless and they will meet again the week after next.
