Rangers scrape win over Killie

by Tony Cuddihy , 13 March 2011

A Tim Clancy own goal gave Rangers a 2-1 victory over Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premier League, with Walter Smith's side closing in on top of the table Celtic.

El-Hadji Diouf had struck to give Rangers a first half lead, before Jamie Hamill's penalty restored parity.

Rangers were lethargic but almost took the lead when Kyle Bartley directed Diouf's corner towards goal, but Mohamadou Sissoko cleared the ball.

Diouf then fired wide from six yards, while a Hamill shot went wide of Allen McGregor's goal.

Rangers finally took the lead in the 38th minute, Steven Whittaker seizing on a mistake by the Killie defence to set up Diouf, who shot home from inside the penalty area.

The Gers were happy to rest on their slender lead and were duly punished.

Richard Foster's high challenge on Clancy was penalised by referee Alan Muir and Hamill converted from 12 yards.

Bartley fired over a Diouf free-kick as Rangers went in search of a winner, and that came three minutes before the whistle when Clancy turned a cross by Vladimir Weiss into his own net.
