Jelavic treble beats Tangerines

by Setanta staff , 05 November 2011

Nikica Jelavic scored a hat-trick as Rangers defeated Dundee United 3-1 at Ibrox in the Scottish Premier League.

Jelavic headed the opener and converted a penalty, before completing the scoring after Jon Daly had pulled one back for the visitors.

The Tangerines put Rangers under pressure early on but the home side comfortably dealt with United's attacks and took the lead in the 19th minute, as Jelavic's powerful header from a Matt McKay cross beat Dusan Pernis.

United responded well to going behind, and again enjoyed the better of the exchanges. The closest they came to levelling was when Allan McGregor saved at his near post from Daly, soon before the break.

The visitors were again on top early in the second half, but soon fell 2-0 behind. Just after the hour-mark, the hosts won a penalty thanks to Paul Dixon's foul on Gregg Wylde, allowing Jelavic to send Pernis the wrong way from the spot.

Dundee United gave themselves with 17 minutes to go, as Daly headed home expertly following Garry Kenneth's cross.

Rangers, however, ensured that they would take all the points as Jelavic completed his hat-trick, stooping to head home Steven Whittaker's centre.
The encounter ended in controversial fashion, with an off-the-ball incident leading to the hosts' Wylde being sent off.
