Ugly scenes in Tyrone investigated

by Setanta staff , 14 November 2011

The Tyrone County Board will launch a thorough investigation into the mass brawl that marred Sunday’s Division One League final between Carrickmore and Dromore.

Dromore ran out five-point winners, however – making more headlines – a fight broke out between players from both sides late on in the game, and regrettably the violence also spilled over into the crowd.

A number of spectators were involved in ugly scenes, with several of them injured as a result. The fracas lasted nearly ten minutes and was not the first regrettable incident in Tyrone football circles in recent times, with a referee seriously assaulted at a ladies match earlier in the season. That incident saw two men hit with lifetime bans.

Carrickmore players Gabriel McCallan and Plunkett McCallan were given red cards in Sunday’s brawl, with order eventually being restored as Dromore took the title.

An investigation has already been launched by the county board, who have released a statement which read: "The Tyrone Competitions Control Committee (CCC) will review the full match report from the referee and will also review video evidence of the game."

"(We) unreservedly the actions of those people involved in fighting in the crowd. There is no place for scenes such as these in our games.

"The people involved should come forward and accept responsibility for their actions. Their failure to do so will only further discredit their own clubs and our association."
