Kelly unsure on Owls future

by Admin , 07 February 2011

Rob Kelly admits he does not know what the future holds for him in the wake of Gary Megson's appointment as manager.

Kelly picked the Sheffield Wednesday team for Saturday's 2-2 draw with MK Dons along with fellow coach Billy Barr, but Alan Irvine's former assistant says he is in the dark over Megson's own plans for a backroom staff.

Both of them though are widely tipped to be leaving Hillsborough, as the former Bolton boss looks to bring in his own men which could include Chris Evans who worked as his sidekick at the Reebok Stadium.

Kelly was unable to shed any light on the situation when quizzed on the situation following the Owls' second-half fight back from a two goal deficit, as the chain of events following Irvine's sacking on Wednesday had happened too quickly.

His only focus ahead of the visit of the Dons' had been on preparing the players for the game, while Megson's acceptance of the job was not officially made public until late on Friday evening.

Kelly said: "I picked the team as he hadn't seen or worked with the players, although he did introduce himself before the game.

"I haven't spoken to him about my role yet as he was only appointed at 5 o'clock on Friday, so quite rightly he had other priorities to sort out, getting ready for the game and all that, but I think his plan of taking a backseat lasted about eight seconds!

"The new manager came in at half-time and made the changes when we found ourselves two down and his words in the dressing room certainly worked."

Substitute Neil Mellor scored Wednesday's first in 69th minute as he latched onto an excellent through-ball by Giles Coke, before Clinton Morrison rescued a point with a hooked effort in the final ten minute against a Dons side who finished the game with nine men.

Gary MacKenzie and Peter Leven were the players to get their marching orders with the latter stopped Daniel Jones as he charged through on goal for a possible winner late on.

Kelly added: "I thought we were much better in the second-half and in the end, we are a little disappointed not to have won the game, but credit to MK Dons they stuck in there after going down to ten and then nine men and made it as difficult as they could.

"I didn't think we started the game that badly although we didn't ask enough questions of them and then they break and score.

"When you are in a run like this, goals do change games and affect players whatever people say, and then they go and get the second one and you know it's going to be a difficult day.

"However, in the second-half we played with a lot more verve and got about them and got the ball forward much earlier. I think the two sending-offs have happened not through dissent, but because we have asked questions and started challenging them."
