Wenger: Nothing wrong with deal for Toral

by JP Lonergan , 25 February 2011

Arsene Wenger has defender Arsenal’s signing of promising teenager Jon Toral from Barcelona.

The Gunners have been criticised by the Catalan giants, with Barca president Sandro Rosell declaring their pursuit of the 16-year-old as ‘a little immoral’.

It has been reported that the Premier League title hopefuls paid £296,000 for Toral, whose age made him free to sign for any professional club, the player opting to follow in the footsteps of Cesc Fabregas who continues to be linked with a return to Barcelona to this very day.

Wenger, though, says Arsenal have done nothing wrong in acquiring the promising youngster, who has an English mother.

The Frenchman said on Friday: "You forget that this boy is English.

"He has an English passport, his mother is from England, and hopefully he will join us in the summer.

"We have players who leave us for other professional clubs in England. We have done what just is legal.

"I love Barcelona, I love Catalonia. I have nothing against them, but when a player who is half English and Spanish wants to join us, why should we turn him down if it's all legal?

"If we have done something illegal, I will say, 'Sorry, my boy, we cannot do it'. Plenty of players leave us under exactly the same rule."

On Rosell's fire-stoking quotes, he would only add: "I do not want to go further on that front because it is very difficult.

"If you go in the academy of Barcelona and you look where all the players come from, come back to me and we can talk about it."

The two sides will meet at Camp Nou in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie in just under a fortnight, with the Gunners 2-1 up from the game at the Emirates.
