Brum through at Wolves' expense

by Tony Cuddihy , 18 January 2012

Birmingham are through to the fourth round of the FA Cup after beating local rivals Wolves 1-0 at Molineux.

Wade Elliott got the only goal of the game.

The first half comprised two chances for Birmingham, and little else.

First, Adam Rooney took far too long to shoot and allowed George Elokobi to tackle him at the last minute. There were reasonable calls for a penalty, but Howard Webb was not having them.

Then, five minutes before the break, Jordan Mutch's excellent free-kick from deep was headed towards goal by Curtis Davies. However, Dorus de Vries got down impressively to save.

Wolves' only half chance came from a long range Nenad Milijas free-kick, which Colin Doyle gathered easily, before Jonathan Spector shot across goal for Birmingham.

The second half was equally low on quality, the first chance of note coming on 64 minutes when 17-year-old Blues starlet Nathan Redmond skied the ball high and wide.

Four minutes later, Adlene Guedioura's shot seemed to be heading for Doyle's top corner, but sailed just the upright.

On 74 minutes, finally, a goal. From a Birmingham corner David Murphy's shot came back off the post and Wade Elliott, lying on the ground, somehow managed to scoop in the rebound.

Beausejour could have wrapped things up for Birmingham, but saw his strike turned away by De Vries.

Doyle ensured his team's passage with a brilliant late save from Stephen Hunt tight angled shot.
