Wigan boss Roberto Martinez says he hopes to bring in "a couple" of players before the end of the transfer window.
The Latics are once again fighting for Premier League survival and currently sit at the bottom of the table, two points from safety.
Tottenham's Giovani Dos Santos and Leeds' midfielder Adam Clayton have both been mentioned in the past as potential targets, but Martinez is refusing to name his targets.
"It is not about the player you can bring in who can make a massive impact," he told Sky Sports News.
"I think it is a player who can help the players we already have at the football club. We have been working for a while and the group is very strong, but we need to look at a couple of options that could help.
"It is not about finding that super player who can come in and save our season. That is not the way we are and that is not the way we work.
"But it is important that any window, even in January, we need to take it into our advantage as much as we can.
"We will carry on working hard. It is not just to bring in players just for the sake of it. I think that can have a really negative effect."
