Masters glory for Robertson

by Setanta Staff , 23 January 2012

Neil Robertson has won the Masters for the first time after he defeated Shaun Murphy 10-6 in the final at Alexandra Palace.

The Australian, who became only the fourth overseas player to win the coveted Masters title, clinched victory with a break of 70, and kept up his record of winning every major final he has contested.

Robertson, now seven from seven in finals, said that a good start was the key to winning the match, but acknowledged that opponent Murphy had started well.

"Shaun probably dominated the early stages of the first session but had a pretty bad run of the ball, so I was quite lucky to be in there at 3-3."

He went on to add: "I think I played really good snooker and scored heavily."

Murphy, who was bidding to become only the eighth man in history to win the triple crown of World Championship, UK Open and Masters, was gracious in defeat.

Murphy said: "His all-round game has become one of the best, if not the best, in the game."
