Rooney set to face Chelsea

by Michelle Fortune , 01 February 2012

Sir Alex Ferguson hopes to be able to call upon Wayne Rooney and Nani for Manchester United' clash with Chelsea on Sunday.

Rooney has missed the last two matches with an ankle injury, while Nani was thought to be facing up to a month on the sidelines after sustaining a foot injury.

However, Ferguson has issued an upbeat bulletin on the pair and he is hopeful that they be available for the trip to Stamford Bridge.

"We're hopeful Wayne Rooney, Nani and possibly Ashley Young will be fit for Sunday," Ferguson said.

Ferguson was left with a goalkeeping crisis ahead of the visit of Stoke with both Anders Lindegaard and David de Gea ruled out but third choice Amos proved an able understudy as he kept a clean sheet.

"Anders got injured in training and then David got injured at the end of training, so we had a right nightmare there," Ferguson added.

"Ben Amos didn't have a lot to do but he was confident and he was composed. I'm pleased with that."

United's 2-0 victory over Stoke coupled with Everton's defeat of Manchester City helped the champions draw level on points with their nearest rivals at the top of the table.

With 15 games remaining Ferguson knows there are plenty of twists still to come but he has warned that March will prove a crucial month in the title race.

"It's still early doors [in terms of the title race]. It's only the last day in January," he said.

"I always say that March is a very important month, as well as the beginning of April. We play Manchester City in April, for instance."
