Double boost for Wales

by Michelle Fortune , 03 February 2012

Wales have been boosted by the return of Jamie Roberts and Rhys Priestland for the RBS Six Nations clash against Ireland on Sunday.

Both players have been battling to recover from knee injuries in time for the trip to Dublin and coach Warren Gatland delayed naming his team to give the pair as much time as possible to prove their fitness.

However, Dan Lydiate failed in his attempt to recover from an ankle injury and will sit out the Aviva Stadium tie, which is a repeat of the World Cup quarter-final, which Wales won.

Roberts will start in the centre with Priestland named at fly-half where he will be partnered by Mike Phillips. Ryan Jones comes in for Lydiate at flanker.

Prop Gethin Jenkins and loose-head Matthew Rees were both ruled out earlier in their week and Gatland has named Rhys Gill and Huw Bennett in their place.

Gatland has made five changes to the side that defeated Ireland in Wellington with Alex Cuthbert replacing the now retired Shane Williams on the wing, while  Bradley Davies and Ian Evans team up at lock.

"We have been able to retain continuity in some key areas," Gatland said.

"We have been working hard, and we feel we are approaching this match with the right attitude and with some good preparation work done.

"We are two sides who know each other well.

"Ireland will not have enjoyed losing to us in New Zealand. They will want to redress the balance in Dublin this weekend, but they will find us in just as determined a mood."

Wales: L Halfpenny; A Cuthbert; J Davies, J Roberts; G North; R Priestland, M Phillips; R Gill, H Bennett, A Jones, B Davies, I Evans, R Jones, S Warburton (c), T Faletau.

Replacements: K Owens, P James, A Powell, J Tipuric, L Williams, J Hook, S Williams.
