Louth lift it after the break

by Setanta staff , 05 February 2012

Louth overcame a half-time deficit to defeat Westmeath by 0-12 to 1-6 in their Allianz Football League Division Two opener on Sunday.

The Lake County, aided by a Callum McCormack goal, had led the all-Leinster affair by a single score at half-time, but Paddy Keenan inspired Peter Fitzpatrick's men to take the Haggardstown game by the scruff of the neck and win out.

Westmeath, without their Garrycastle contingent, went two points behind early on as Darren Clarke and Ronan Carroll got the game's first scores for Louth. Trevor English havled that gap though, and then Westmeath hit the front when a fine team move ended with McCormack finishing well to raise a green flag.

Carroll and Clarke tied it up again, and Keenan gave Louth the lead, but scores from Denis Glennon and Kieran Martin reversed that as Pat Flanagan's side recorded a 1-3 to 0-5 half-time advantage.

However, the second half was all about Louth as Clarke and Keenan restored their lead, and Liam Shevlin also got up the field for an impressive score.

Glennon went off for Westmeath, and with him went any real chance of his county getting the scores they needed to take something from the game.

Louth defended soundly thereafter, and took their chances through Aaron Hoey, Keenan and Clarke to win by three in the end.
