Adebayor inspires Spurs rampage

by Tony Cuddihy , 11 February 2012

Harry Redknapp's return to the Tottenham bench coincided with his team's best display of the season, as they dismantled Newcastle 5-0 at White Hart Lane.

Redknapp - heavily linked with vacant managerial position with England - missed his side's scoreless draw with Liverpool, but oversaw a fine performance.

Tottenham were 3-0 up inside the opening twenty minutes.

First, Benoit Assou-Ekotto got on the end of a cross by the impressive Adebayor, who played a one-two with Niko Kranjcar before crossing for the full-back to score.

Two minutes later it was 2-0 and, again, Adebayor was the creator as he muscled past Fabricio Coloccini and crossed for strike partner Louis Saha, who turned it in from six yards.

For the third, Adebayor took the ball from Luka Modric, who had jinked into the box, and again found Saha. The former Manchester United striker smashed the ball home from 12 yards.

Newcastle's only chance of the first half came when Demba Ba curled a free-kick wide.

Tim Krul's save from Adebayor's close-range shot ricocheted in to the path of Kranjcar and he swept home from 15 yards for his first Spurs goal in a year.

With the game won for Spurs, Adebayor finally got the goal his play deserved when Saha nodded Assou-Ekotto's cross to the Togolese and he made no mistake.

Brad Friedel had to be at his best to save from Ba at point blank range, but Newcastle offered nothing.
