AFLD2: Galway squeeze past Meath

by Sean Nolan , 11 March 2012

A late, late point by Paul Conroy saw Galway beat Meath by the minimum at Pearse Stadium 1-12 to 1-11, on Sunday.

For long periods this looked like it would end all square but Conroy struck late to give Alan Mulholland’s side a vital win in the scrap to escape Division 2.

It was Conroy’s first-half goal that gave Galway a 1-7 to 0-6 half-time lead and the Joyces, Nicky and Padraig, with the latter appearing for this 15th season in maroon, came in in the second half to add some extra gloss to Galway’s game.

But then, not for the first time, a controversial Joe Sheridan goal seemed to tip the game towards a draw. The big full-forward’s punched goal was given the all clear by the officials, tying the game up at 1-11 each with less than 10 to go.

But Conroy struck in injury time to see the Tribe climb over the Royals in the table.
