AFL: Div 3 glory for Longford

by Kieran O'Daly , 28 April 2012

Longford were crowned AFL Division 3 champions when they beat Wexford 1-12 to 0-13 at Croke Park on Saturday.

The result sees Longford promoted to the second tier for next season. However, they were made to fight hard for their victory against a very competitive Wexford side.

Sean McCormack scored 0-07 in the opening 35 minutes as Longford dominated the first half. An injury time goal from substitute Paul Kelly saw them build up a commanding 1-10 to 0-03 lead at the break.

Wexford fought back after the break, with Ciaran Lyng and Redmond Barry on target as the Model County clawed back the deficit to just two points at one stage. However, McCormack responded with Longford’s only two scores of the second period to keep his side in control and take his tally for the day to a match-winning 0-09.

Jason Ryan’s side continued to push in search of what looked an unlikely victory at half-time, but it wasn’t to be and Longford held on to claim the spoils and a place in Division 2 next season.
