by Admin , 12 February 2010

Snooker star Stephen Lee has been arrested on suspicion of cheating after an investigation into suspicious betting patterns.

The 35-year-old was arrested by West Midlands Police on Thursday, with a spokesman confirming that "a 35-year-old man from Wiltshire was arrested on Thursday February 11 on suspicion of cheating.

"This follows a joint operation where West Midlands Police have assisted the Gambling Commission, following their concerns about suspicious betting patterns."

The Trowbridge-born player was once ranked fifth in the world and hailed by his peers for having one of the best cueing actions in the game.

The burley potter has won four ranking tournaments to date, claiming the Grand Prix/LG Cup in 1998 and 2001, the Scottish Open in 2002 and the Welsh Open in 2006.

However his star has waned in recent years and the man who spent 10 seasons in the Top 16 now finds himself ranked 25th in the world and he was forced to qualify for the 2009 World Championships where was beaten 10-4 in the first round by Ryan Day.
