No punishment for McCarthy tackle

by Admin , 02 March 2010 football news

Birmingham City defender Liam Ridgewell has escaped action over his tackle on Wigan's James McCarthy at the weekend.

The Football Association have spoken with referee Anthony Taylor who saw the incident, and decided the incident was not worthy of any follow-up.

McCarthy suffered a recurrence of an ankle injury following the touchline challenge by Ridgewell in which referee's assistant Trevor Massey had to be carried off after being struck in the face by the tip of the corner flag.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez is sure to be livid with this latest ruling after initially describing the challenge as 'leg breaker.'

A Football Association spokesman said: "The FA are to take no action against Liam Ridgewell because the referee saw the incident at the time and dealt with the situation at the time."
