Alexander too much for Urango

by Admin , 07 March 2010

American Devon Alexander stopped Juan Urango in the eight round to unify the WBC and IBF light welterweight titles.

Unbeaten Alexander, whose record now reads 20-0 with 13 knockouts, delivered a right uppercut in the eighth round which proved enough to defeat Urango.

In an entertaining encounter, the Colombian fighter had bossed the contest during the previous two rounds, but Alexander came back to stop Urango for the first time in his career.

Urango returned to his feat after Alexander's powerful shot but after another attack from the highly-rated American, referee Benjy Esteves called an end to the contest.

Speaking after the fight Alexander said: "Speed kills anything, I knew he was a brawler, that he would keep coming. I knew if I didn't stand in front of him I would be the champion. He didn't hurt me at all. "

When I see blood, I want to go for it, but (I stayed) focused, stuck to the game plan and now I'm the IBF champion.

I can beat anybody."

It was the first time in his career Urango has been stopped and just his third loss, with only Ricky Hatton and Andre Berto inflicting defeats on the Colombian before Alexander's victory.
