Gerrard set to avoid punishment

by Tony Cuddihy , 10 March 2010

Steven Gerrard is set to avoid an FA punishment for his apparent V-sign gesture at referee Andre Marriner during Monday night's defeat to Wigan at the DW Stadium.

With his team 1-0 down, the Liverpool captain was frustrated when he was booked for a late challenge on James McCarthy. He appeared to flip two fingers at Marriner but the referee has suggested he will not include the incident in his referee's report.

'The FA, it is understood, accept Liverpool's version of events that Gerrard was not gesturing at Marriner,' reports the Daily Mail.

'Indeed the midfielder was making the point that he had been brought down twice in bad tackles and there had been no sanction while he was annoyed at being cautioned. He was not specifically targeting the official.'
