Rafa backs Stevie G

by Admin , 10 March 2010 Liverpool Generic

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has jumped to the defence of skipper Steven Gerrard as he looks likely to escape any FA punishment.

Gerrard appeared to give referee Andre Marriner a V-sign after being booked in the dismal efforts against Wigan on Monday but he looks unlikely to face any punishment with Liverpool apparently claiming the 'gesture' was not aimed at the official.

Benitez has jumped to his aid, and said: "Sometimes you move your fingers. It was nothing.

"We are not considering it, it was nothing.

"All the players know they have to behave on the pitch.

"I was more worried about the silly fouls we were giving to Wigan."
