Cook pleased by start

by Nick Royle , 12 March 2010

Alastair Cook hit an unbeaten 158 in his first game as England's Test captain as the tourists cruised to 374 for three against Bangladesh at stumps on day one of the first Test.

Kevin Pietersen was out for 99, as he and Cook put on 170 for the third wicket.

Michael Carberry, one of two England debutants alongside Steven Finn, impressed early on as he hit Rubel Hossain for three fours in the fourth over.

He and Cook put on 72 for the first wicket before, before the Hampshire newcomer was dismissed lbw off Mahmudullah for thirty.

Jonathan Trott was unlucky to be given out on 39 by umpire Tony Hill, when a Rubel Hossain bouncer struck his helmet and was caught by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim.

Pietersen, having hit his fifty off 61 balls, increased the scoring rate even further before being becalmed in the nineties and then being adjudged lbw to Abdur Razzaq.

Cook and Paul Collingwood (32 not out) brought the visitors to stumps.

Cook was delighted to hit his 11th Test ton, in his first game as skipper.

"It's kind of what dreams are made of," Cook told Sky Sports News.

"To bat all day, I'm really proud of that and obviously the team are in a really good position."
