Schwartzel leads in windy Miami

by Tony Cuddihy , 12 March 2010

Charl Schwartzel leads the WGC-CA Championship in Miami after shooting the only bogey-free round on the first day.

The South African shot a brilliant 67 in windy conditions, leaving himself on five-under-par and leading a group of three players by a single shot.

Robert Allenby, Ernie Els and Vijay Singh all shot 68s, with the Fijian leading going into the final hole before double bogeying.

“I didn't think 67 was out there today at the beginning of the day with the wind as strong as it was,” said Schwartzel. “I made five birdies, which I thought you could do, especially with three par fives being downwind, and some of them you're hitting wedge.

“The big achievement for me today was not making any bogeys. That kept the scorecard very clean.”

Paul Casey and Italian Francesco Molinari are among six players a further shot behind on three-under going into the second round, while Ireland's Padraig Harrington will fancy his own chances of getting among the leaders after his round of 70.

Harrington birdied the first hole but undid his good work with bogey on the fourth. He quickly put that right by picking up a shot on the fifth hole, going to record three more birdies in a tight round.
