Evans inspires Scotland

by Michelle Fortune , 14 March 2010

Thom Evans gave a pre-match team talk to Scotland before their Calcutta Cup draw with England on Saturday.

Evans is facing an uncertain future in the sport following a spinal injury sustained in the defeat to Wales in Cardiff last month, but the winger was able to attend visit his team-mates on the eve of the match at Murrayfield.

The Glasgow player, who is recovering from spinal surgery, presented Dan Parks with a jersey to mark the occasion of his 50th cap and the fly-half admits it was an emotional time for the squad.

"It was a really touching moment," Parks said.

"He's a great guy, Thommy, and I'm going to miss playing with him. It was a great occasion, very emotional, and I don't think there was a dry eye in the house. It was great to see him and great to see him up and about, walking around."

"For me, I felt very privileged that Thom spoke very highly of me and the friendship we have. It's very touching and something I'll never forget."

Evans' brother Max believes the talk inspired the team and helped them claim their first point of the RBS Six Nations campaign.

"It was a really special occasion. He did well to get through all he wanted to say because it was obviously very emotional and I think the boys really appreciated it," he said.

"Once they got through the tears, I think it helped remembering it. Because you realised the added thing you were playing for. It was easy for me but some of the other boys put their bodies on the line."
