Pac Man munches up Clottey

by Admin , 14 March 2010

Manny Pacquiao retained his WBO welterweight title with a comfortable points win against a defensive Joshua Clottey in Texas.

The Filipino dominated his Ghanaian opponent from start to finish in front of 50,994 fans at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium on Saturday evening and was given every round by one ringside judge, while the two others gave him all but one.

Clottey spent most of the bout with his gloves up high in front of his face and rarely risked going on the offensive which was the key reason behind him staying on his feet to the final bell.

"He's a very defensive fighter," said Pacquiao. "I was looking for a strategy to beat that defence, like body shots, uppercuts. It worked.

"Cottey is not an easy opponent - he is very strong.

"He took a lot of punches and was never hurt."

Trainer Freddie Roach was critical of Clottey's approach given that he was supposed to be fighting for a world title but only threw 398 punches to Pacquiao's 1,231.

He said "When you fight for the world title it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"I thought he would have thrown more punches. He was in survival mode and when a guy is trying to survive it is hard to knock him out."
