Roger Federer survived a scare on his way to a second round victory at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
Playing his first tournament since his Australian Open success, Federer appeared rusty and needed three sets to defeat Victor Hanescu to join Andy Murray in the third round.
Things started brightly for the world number one as he broke Hanescu in the second game before taking the first set in just 30 minutes. However, Hanescu proved much stronger in the second and was rewarded for his efforts with a break in the sixth game.
The Swiss master managed to break back but he could not find a way through in the resulting tie-break as Hanescu took to set to force the match into a decided.
There was little the Romanian could do in the third as Federer broke in the second and sixth games to progress into the third round.
"I was happy with the way I played. Not having played for so long, I thought it was a good match overall," said Federer, who will play Marcos Baghdatis in the next round.
"I missed some of the clutch serving when I really needed it, couldn't really get that one perfect serve I was sometimes looking for, but that's something that happens."
There were no such worries for sixth seed Swede Robin Soderling as he defeated Evgeny Korolev of Kazakhstan 6-2 6-4, while Andy Roddick was another winner, defeating Lu Yen-hsun of Taiwan 6-4 6-4.
Another player through is ninth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, although Gael Monfils and David Ferrer are both out after losing to Simon Gruel and James Blake respectively.
