New dad concerns for Martinez

by Admin , 16 March 2010 football news

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has expressed his concern about Gary Caldwell's recent form and believes life as a new dad is contributing.

Caldwell looked out of sorts at the weekend during the Latics' 4-0 defeat to Bolton at the Reebok Stadium, and Martinez is convinced his below par display is partly down to a few sleepless nights.

The Spaniard said: "He has been very solid for us and has a great partnership with Titus Bramble, but we are all human beings.

"He is a father and has a newborn baby, sometimes that can affect you.

"But he needs to play his football and get rid of that feeling from the weekend and the difference he is facing in his life.

"Gary has got a nanny in and he is also sleeping in the spare room. I think there is also a mental side of becoming a dad and the extra responsibility.

"The structure of your family routine changes.

"But he is a captain, he is a leader. He is going to get all of the help that we can give him. We just looked a bit drained at the weekend. Playing four games in 13 days is huge - sometimes you get situations like that."

Martinez will be hoping his whole team can all play better tonight as Aston Villa visit the DW Stadium.
