6N Preview: Wales v Italy

by setanta.com staff , 18 March 2010

Tom Prydie is to become Wales' youngest international after being named in the starting line-up for Saturday's RBS 6 Nations clash with Italy in Cardiff.

The Ospreys starlet, who is just 18 years and 27 days old, comes into the side on the right wing for Leigh Halfpenny, who drops out of the squad.

Elsewhere, Wales are boosted by the return to full fitness of Mike Phillips, Ryan Jones and Gethin Jenkins. Phillips reclaims the number nine jersey from Richie Rees, Jones returns to the back row at the expense of Gareth Delve while Jenkins takes over from Paul James at loose-head prop.

In the final change to the side which lost to Ireland in Dublin last weekend, Sam Warburton gets the nod at openside flanker ahead of his Cardiff Blues colleague Martyn Williams.

Regarding the inclusion of Prydie, Wales boss Warren Gatland commented: "Tom has been with us for the duration of the campaign. He was one of two youngsters - brought in alongside Kristian Phillips - who we wanted to have a look at and we've been impressed with him.

"He is the fastest player in the squad, he can play at full back as well as on the wing and he is not afraid to tackle so we'll see how he goes."

Italy boss Nick Mallett, meanwhile, is sweating on the availability of Carlo del Fava and Paul Derbyshire for the trip to Cardiff.

The pair have been named in the starting line-up for the game at the Millennium Stadium but both must undergo late fitness tests after picking up knocks in training this week. If del Fava is ruled out, Marco Bortolami will come into the second row, while Josh Sole will take over at blindside flanker should Derbyshire succumb to his injury.

Elsewhere, Pablo Canavosio has been rewarded for his impressive, try-scoring cameo in last weekend's defeat by France with the number nine jersey, with Tito Tebaldi the man to make way.

Also in the back-line, Kaine Robertson earns a recall on the right wing and that sees the versatile Andrea Masi switch to outside centre and Gonzalo Canale drop to the bench.
