Garrett Willis ended the first day of the Transitions Championship as the surprise leader in Florida.
The 36-year-old world number 251, only taking part on the Innisbrook course due to having a sponsor's exemption, shot a fine six-under-par for a two-shot lead.
Having suffered a dropped shot as early as the third Willis hit back to fire a very good 65 with seven birdies, leaving him two clear of South Africa's Retief Goosen, the defending champion, as well as Jim Furyk, Carl Pettersson, Jonathan Byrd, Jeff Maggert - only playing after replacing the injured Vijay Singh - and rising star Rickie Fowler.
A sly punter might have fancied Willis for an early lead given that he is familiar with the course. He lives just 40km or so away from it and will hope that local knowledge could yet see him repeat his sole PGA Tour success to date, one he claimed at Tucson nine years ago.
England's Ross Fisher, meanwhile, ended the day as one of four players tied for eight on nine-under, that after he suffered badly with a poor bogey at the 17th.
Padraig Harrington, meanwhile, having spent St Patrick's Day at the White House as a guest of President Barack Obama, had a somewhat quiet 69 and one was one of ten players to sign for two-under, though not without carding an eagle-three at the 11th.
But highly-rated Japanese teenager Ryo Ishikawa suffered a morale-crushing 12-over 83 after he made his return to the Tour following his high school graduation.
