Kyle Eastmond's kicking helped St Helens record a 28-18 win against Warrington to deny the Wolves top spot in Super League.
Saints boss Mick Potter was boosted by having a full strength side for the first time this season and they looked on course for a comfortable win when leading 20-4 after 12 minutes of the second half at Knowsley Road thanks to tries from Eastmond, Jon Wilkin and Ade Gardner.
However Warrington hit back with three tries in eight minutes through Matt King, Ben Harrison and Chris Hicks, adding to Simon Grix's solitary first half effort.
Gardner went over again for Saints to make it four tries each, but Eastmond's success in converting his six kicks compared to the Wolves' one out of four goal attempts made the difference in the end.
After seeing his side fail to win at Knowsley Road for the 16th Super League game, Warrington Wolves boss Tony Smith said: "I thought we dominated many facets of the game but I was very pleased with the efforts of my players.
"
They're all pretty disappointed but, if we put that sort of effort in every week, we'll be at the pointy end of the competition."
St Helens coach Potter added: "It was very satisfying.
They were down on our line quite a bit and we produced a massive effort in defence.
"I thought we handled the conditions really well. It came down to the best kicking game and our last play options were pretty good."
