Mancini reassures Ireland

by Tony Cuddihy , 20 March 2010

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has reassured Stephen Ireland that he has a place in his plans.

The Irish midfielder has played a bit-part role since the Italian took over from Mark Hughes in December, making only 15 starts in the Premier League all season.

Mancini has, by and large, preferred the defensive qualities of Nigel de Jong and Gareth Barry in the centre of the City midfield, leaving the attack minded 23-year-old kicking his heels on the bench.

However, the former Inter Milan coach says Ireland remains an important part of his plans and he will play some part in the remaining league fixtures as long as he maintains his fitness.

Mancini said: "I have a lot of respect for Stephen Ireland because he is a good player.

"In the week of the Chelsea game he had an injury. But now he has recovered and is ready to play.

"I have a number of options in midfield and Stephen is an important player for us."
