Ace Ljubicic stuns Nadal in Indian Wells

by Admin , 21 March 2010

Ivan Ljubicic smashed 17 aces as he dumped out defending champion Rafael Nadal to reach the final of the BNP Paribas Open.

The big-hitting Croatian, who had already seen off second seed Novak Djokovic to reach the quarter-finals, ended a five-match losing run against Nadal to claim a 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-1) victory.

And, Ljubicic will now look to upset the odds again when he faces seventh seed Andy Roddick in Sunday's final at Indian Wells after the American beat Swede Robin Soderling 6-4 3-6 6-3.

Nadal was left licking his wounds afterwards as the Spaniard felt he was playing well enough to retain the trophy, but claimed his defeat to 20 seed Ljubicic was an 'accident'.

The Spaniard said: "That's my feeling, because I was playing (well) enough to win the tournament."

He added: "I have to learn to try to play more aggressive next time, try to convert the opportunities."

Meanwhile Roddick is hopeful of finally getting his hands on silverware after reaching his first Indian Wells final, having lost in the semis on three previous occasions.

"I would definitely love to win this - this is probably the only big tournament in North America that I haven't won", he said

"I feel like the crowd was on my side and I hope they're there tomorrow - they certainly have an effect on the match."
