United dumped out of Champions League

Manchester United are out of the Champions League despite beating Bayern Munich 3-2 at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening. The German side advance on the away goals rule, with the tie ending 4-4 on aggregate.


Darron Gibson and Nani gave United - for whom Wayne Rooney started - a 2-0 lead before the ten-minute mark, with the Portuguese grabbing his second later in the first half to seemingly give Sir Alex Ferguson's side an unassailable lead.

However, Ivica Olic pulled a goal back just before the half-way mark after some sloppy United defending, before Arjen Robben volleyed home a brilliant winner fifteen minutes from time.

Three minutes into the match, Gibson gave his side the lead. Rafael advanced forward before feeding the ball to Rooney, who in turned slotted in Gibson to lash the ball low past Hans-Jorg Butt.

Nani made it 2-0 on seven minutes when he flicked home an Antonio Valencia cross, with the winger grabbing his second, also from a Valencia cross, by shooting high into the Bayern net on 41 minutes.

That was as good as it got for United. Olic made it 3-1 when he easily held off Michael Carrick before shooting past Edwin van der Sar just before half-time, and Bayern were truly back in the match five minutes after the break when Rafael was sent off for a second bookable offence, following a tangle with Frank Ribery.

On 74 minutes, the Red Devils' dream was ended when Robben volleyed home a Ribery cross. United - a man down - were not able to get back into the game and Louis van Gaal's side were through to the semi-finals.
