Fulham record famous win

by setantasports.com staff , 08 April 2010

Fulham are through to the semi-finals of the Europa League, after a 1-0 win over Wolfsburg gave them a 3-1 aggregate win.

Bobby Zamora scored the only goal of the game after just 21 seconds to ensure the progress of Roy Hodgson's men and set up a semi-final encounter with Hamburg.

In front of their most famous fan, the actor Hugh Grant, The Cottagers ensured that their mammoth European odyssey, currently running at Nine Months since their Third Qualifying Round win over FC Vetra in July, continued to be An Awfully Big Adventure.

The goal came with the first attack of the game, when Zoltan Gera laid the ball off to Zamora, who turned and beat Jan Simunek on the edge of the box before finishing past Diego Benaglio.

Gera could have made it two five minutes later, only for Benaglio in the Wolfsburg goal to make a fine save.

Fulham captain Danny Murphy then made a mistake at the other end to allow Christian Gentner a chance but his shot was tipped around the post by Mark Schwarzer.

The Fulham goalkeeper, a runner-up in this tournament in 2006 with Middlesbrough, denied Edwin Dzeko's volley on 72 minutes with a full-length save, a crucial stop as a goal at that point would have given the Germans a real chance.

In the 75th minute, Benaglio then made a superb point-blank save from Simon Davies to keep his side in the game.

Ten minutes later, Dzeko hit the post and Grafite was unable to convert the rebound.

But Fulham held on to progress to the semi-finals and set up a two-legged tie with Hamburg.
