by setanta.com staff , 11 May 2010

Former England boss Steve McClaren has become the new manager of German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.

McClaren, who sensationally led FC Twente to the Dutch title in the season just completed, had been linked with several jobs including some in England.

However, he will now take over the side that won the German title in 2009 and has inked a two-year deal.

Wolfsburg have not had such a successful season a year on. They finished eighth in the Bundesliga and were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage before Fulham eliminated them at the quarter-final stage of the Europa League.

They dispensed with fresh boss Armin Veh midway through the season, with Lorenz-Gunther Kostner having been in caretaker charge since.

They have now turned to former Middlesbrough and England coach McClaren to turn things around had been considering his options, after leading at the weekend.
