Gonzalez wins it for Chile

by Tony Cuddihy , 21 June 2010

Former Liverpool winger Mark Gonzalez was the hero as his 75th minute header gave Chile a 1-0 win over Switzerland, for whom Valon Behrami was sent off in the first half.

Referee Khali Al Ghamdi was the central figure as he booked nine players and gave Behrami his marching orders for raising his arms to two Chilean players, Jean Beausejour and Arturo Vidal.

It was an uninspiring first half. Chile appeared to have the greater will to press their opponents, but Switzerland defended superbly. The South American side had a chance to take the lead when Vidal sensed glory from long range. However, in choosing to shoot he ignored his team-mate Matias Fernandez in a far better position, and the chance went wide.

The ineffective Swiss needed to restore balance to the side, so they replaced captain Alexander Frei with Tranquillo Barnetta. However, Chile continued to attack until the end of the half and were unlucky not to take the lead when Isla sent over a great cross. However, there was nobody on hand to despatch it.

Alexis Sanchez thought he had put his side in front early in the second half, with his shot taking a deflection off Stephane Grichting and hitting the back of the net. However, the goal was ruled out for offside.

With the 60 minute mark approaching, Chile were laying siege to the Swiss goal, with the best chance falling to Gonzalez. However, the CSKA Moscow star headed over the bar.

Just as it looked like a goal might never come, Marcelo Bielsa's side took the lead. Esteban Paredes got the ball ahead of Swiss keeper Benaglio, crossed and found Gonzalez at the far post. Gonzalez headed downwards and the ball nestled in the back of the Swiss net.

Switzerland had their best chance of the game as full-time approached but, following good work by Reto Ziegler and Albert Bunjaku, Eren Derdiyok saw his shot go inches past the post.
