Lord Shanakill landed the second Group Two of his career at Goodwood on Tuesday as he fended off the late challenge of Cat Junior in the Betfair Cup.
Previously trained by Karl Burke, Lord Shanakill, ridden by Tom Queally and now trained by Henry Cecil, came late to nab French challenger and well-backed 7-2 favourite Dalghar who ominously took a couple of lengths out of the field passing the furlong marker.
However, Lord Shanakill (13-2) finished best of all and reeled in the French raider to take the spoils by a head from 33-1 shot Cat Junior who came with a wet sail down the outside.
Dalghar had to settle for third half-a-length further afield after looking like taking the spoils at one stage.
Queally said: "He's a classy horse and people forget he's a Group One winner, his class showed today when it mattered.
"We tried him at a mile, he ran in the sprints, but at the end of the day he's a seven-furlong horse. It's a tricky sort of distance because it's in-between and the races aren't there most of the time.
"The last day at Chester did his confidence the world of good. He takes a couple of strides to go through the gears, but once he got there he was flying."
