A thrilling finish to the Betfair Gordon Stakes saw Rebel Soldier justify favouritism in the hands of Ryan Moore on day one of Glorious Goodwood.
Sent to post at odds of 4-1, Jeremy Noseda's three-year-old jolly just about held off the determined late challenge of Dandino (9-2) by a head and in the process gave Moore his third successive victory in the Group Three event after wins aboard Conduit and Harbinger in 2008 and 2009.
Arctic Cosmos (5-1) stayed on well to take third a further one-and-a-quarter lengths back and could be one to follow in the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster in September.
"He travelled nicely the whole way round and quickened up well off a lead," the champion jockey said.
"He just got a little bit idle and lonely being out in front from the two, but it was a nice performance."
Noseda added: "He's an improving horse and has been working well at home.
"I'm really pleased he stepped up from handicaps and he's heading in the right direction."
