There was a National Hunt feel to the sportingbet.com Goodwood Stakes on Wednesday as Nicky Henderson's Ghimaar got the better of the David Pipe-trained Junior.
The pair had clashed in the Ascot Stakes last month with Junior coming out on top but this time it was the turn of Henderson's 6-1 favourite to take the spoils under Eddie Ahern.
The gallop was, as expected, steady in the early stages of the two-mile-five-furlong marathon with On Terms making the running from Junior, although the field was tightly bunched throughout.
Ahern played the waiting game and his patience was finally rewarded when a split arrived, allowing him to come through and challenge for the lead. It was at this time that Lady Eclair also make her move but Ghimaar was full off running and galloped all the way to the line to win by a length and a half.
"He ran a super race on the Flat at Ascot last time after which we decided to go back over hurdles as a confidence booster," said Henderson.
"Eddie gave him a wonderful ride today, going for an incredibly tight gap up the rail. I'd beinclined to put him away now and wait for the winter jumps season because I've already got Sentry Duty for the Cesarewitch."
Relative Strength took third with Lady Eclair only managing fourth.
