Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes once again proved they are the team to follow when it comes to juveniles as King Torus romped to victory in the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
King Torus had won the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket last time out and as a result had to give 3lb away to his rivals, but even that did not prove any trouble to the Oratorio colt as he defeated Stentorian by six lengths.
Stentorian made the running from King Torus but it was only a matter of time before Hughes made his move and it finally came with the furlong pole looming.
The response was immediate as King Torus picked up brilliantly and he pulled away with ease to provide Hannon with his first victory in the Vintage Stakes in 24 years.
"It was a serious performance. I wanted to make it and Frankie (Dettori, rider of Stentorian) did as well," Hughes told reporters. "We were flying and I picked it up with a good and two and a half furlongs to run and he absolutely sprinted up that rail.
"He was a big dope for a long time. In Ascot he was so raw I ended up having to race on my own.
"I begged the boss to put one of these ring-bits on because he loves to lean right.
"He's heavier in your hands and he leans right. I knew he'd love the rail."
