De Villiers faces investigation

by Setantasports.com staff , 30 July 2010

South Africa's embattled coach Peter de Villiers is facing a SANZAR investigation after implying that referees have been showing a bias to New Zealand during Tri-Nations matches to date.

De Villiers' side has endured a torrid campaign so far, losing three from three. This prompted the coach to hint that referees were aiding New Zealand to ensure there is higher interest in the sport in the country when the World Cup is held there next year:

"I've got my own observations about the last two tests (against New Zealand), and I can't say it in public.

"But we do have a World Cup in New Zealand next year, and maybe it was the right thing for them to win the games so they can attract more people to the games next year."

SANZAR (South Africa, New Zealand and Australia Ruby) were quick to react, with chief executive Steve Tew saying:

"Having considered the response from South Africa we have determined that Peter de Villiers' comments may constitute a breach of the SANZAR Code of Conduct and warrant further consideration by a SANZAR Judicial Officer."
