Odds claims Stewards glory

by Setanta Staff , 31 July 2010

Evens And Odds went one better than 12 months ago when landing the Bluesq.com Stewards' Cup at Glorious Goodwood on Saturday.

The six-furlong Heritage Handicap is notoriously difficult to read but those who plumped for Evens And Odds at 20-1 were smiling as Billy Cray steered Dandy Nicholls' charge to a deserved success.

Cray had last year's runner-up in a prominent position in behind Prime Exhibit as Jonny Mudball made the pace up front.

Entering the final furlong Jonny Mudball appeared to have the measure of his rivals but Evens And Odds wore him down to get up by a neck. Prohibit was a length and a quarter back in third with Rileyskeepingfaith a neck away in fourth.

"I've never had any doubts about Billy. He's always in the right place at the right time, and I'm so pleased for him, pleased for the yard and for the staff," said Nicholls of the winning jockey.

"I think we all want the type of horses that can win it and I've been very lucky to win it three times, while always having sprinters that can compete at the highest handicap level.

"I was sat next to Roger Charlton this morning and he's no fool. He'd put the equipment back on Genki and I thought if we could find a couple of lengths with him we'd have a great chance of winning it."

Cray added: "I jumped quickly and followed Prime Exhibit because I knew he was going to make it.

"I never thought about another horse coming from behind, I just kept going."
